Evaluation and Assessment

There are a variety of assessments you may be asked to complete during Transition Year. As the teaching methodologies are generally more active and require a greater level of self –direction than at Junior Certificate it is likely you may be asked to complete pieces for assessment in formats you may not have used very often in the past. Examples may be oral presentations, Powerpoint presentations, projects presented in a scrap book, essay style or displayed on an A2 sheet/ board, creating a video, radio programme, traditional exam, organising an event, producing a newsletter or interviewing others.

You may also be asked to work individually or as a group.

However you are assessed it is important to remember that you must include the following:

  1. Evidence of your research.
  2. Appropriate referencing, for example when referencing a book you should cite it as follows
Doyle, R The Commitments (1987) Vintage,
London
A Website should be cited as

There are three elements to the assessment process.

  1. Portfolio Interviews – 40%
  2. Classwork, Homework, Participation – 40%
  3. Attendance – 20%

Portfolio Interview Requirements
Students are required to select examples of work that reflect their success and have been graded by their subject teacher from the following areas:

  • Core- Three pieces
  • Subject Sampling- Three pieces
  • Transition Year Specific- Three pieces
  • Personal Choice- Three pieces from any area the student most enjoys.

Students must present a total of twelve pieces of work. They must fill in an accompanying Portfolio sheet to be submitted with each piece of work. Sheets are available in school and in the documents section of this site.

Students will be interviewed twice yearly, in December and in May (for current dates please refer to the calendar section). Students are to attend school for their interview only during this time as subject teachers are conducting interviews and no classes will be taught.

Notices with date, time, location and interviewing teacher will be placed on TY noticeboard in the TY cloakroom prior to interview days.

Students are to present themselves with care. Full school uniform with appropriate footwear or business attire ie suit, shirt, tie only are acceptable.

Students may not present work during the interview in May that had been submitted for assessment during the December Portfolio Interviews.
